Motion Capture Workshop in Skellefteå Attracted International Interest
Intersective Game
22 Apr 2025Nearly 30 participants from across Sweden gathered in Skellefteå for two intensive days focused on motion capture technology – a field that’s becoming increasingly important in film, games, and performing arts. Among the participants were dancers, actors, film producers, directors, technicians, and animators, who together explored everything from production and performance to technical setup.
The workshop was organized as part of the Intersective Game project, in collaboration with Film i Västerbotten and Luleå University of Technology. Interest spread far beyond Sweden’s borders – with registrations from countries including Poland and the UK.
– That there’s such strong interest in coming to Skellefteå to deepen one’s knowledge of motion capture is clear proof that our offering is both relevant and unique, says Pernilla Lindmark, Project Manager for Intersective Game.
World-Class Expertise On Site
The workshop featured leading professionals in the field. Nicklas Hansson, Sweden’s top stunt performer and actor in motion capture, with roles in productions like Game of Thrones, Battlefield, and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. John Dower, with over 30 years of experience in film, TV, and game production – including GTA Online, Formula 1 2023, and 007 Legends. He’s also the founder of The Mocap Vaults, the world’s leading training platform for motion capture. And Skellefteå’s own mocap technician Erik Okfors, with many years of experience in the technology.
Motion capture – the technique of digitally capturing movement with millimeter precision in real time – is used in everything from game and film production to VR, performing arts, research, and education. The technology enables new forms of artistic expression and also holds great potential for innovation within industry, healthcare, and learning.
– The goal of the workshop was to give participants a concrete opportunity to explore and test how mocap can be used in production contexts – and that’s exactly what we provided. We hope more people will reach out and want to use the technology in their own projects, says Pernilla Lindmark.
A Testbed That Strengthens Innovation in the North
Skellefteå is one of the few places in Sweden offering this kind of testbed – a creative environment with multiple use cases where interdisciplinary meetings and collaborations can grow. By increasing awareness of how this cutting-edge technology can be applied, new opportunities are created to strengthen innovation and develop new products and services.
