The meeting industry is slowly opening up in the world. During the week, last week Arctic Game Lab has been specially invited to the conference Global Top Round and Gamescom Asia in Singapore. On Friday, the delegation also met with Singapore’s Minister of Trade and Industry.
Global Top Round invests worldwide in game studios in the early stages and helps them develop. They have a collaboration with Arctic Game Lab. The Swede Pontus Mähler is their business development manager.
– We have invited politicians and official representatives around the Arctic Game Lab to show the possibilities with the gaming industry in Southeast Asia and what it could look like in northern Sweden. There are incredibly good conditions for Norrbotten and Västerbotten to take place in the world, especially when they have built up such a good infrastructure for the gaming industry via Arctic Game Lab in a relatively short time. I really hope that the work continues to move forward so that the development can take real speed, says Pontus Mähler.
Arctic Game Lab is a joint venture between Skellefteå, Umeå, Piteå, Boden and Luleå that will create a sustainable gaming industry in northern Sweden. Today, it is northern Europe’s fastest growing gaming cluster. Making contacts in a rapidly growing gaming industry in Singapore and Asia is important both for the continued development of the cluster and, not least, for the game studios business opportunities.
- The game industry has grown strongly for several years and our region is currently the fastest growing in the country. Southeast Asia is a future market and the presence here can mean a lot for our development in the coming years.
On Friday, parts of the delegation met with Singapore’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Alvin Tan, who is also responsible for questions concerning culture and youth. Those who met the minister were Daniel Ådin, chairman of the Skellefteå City Council, Jonas Lundström, business manager at Region Västerbotten, Johan Sjökvist, inward investment director at Luleå Business Region and Arctic Game Labs cluster leader Daniel Wilén. The Minister of Trade and Industry showed great interest and was informed about both the gaming industry and our region’s benefits of, among other things, renewable energy.
– The fact that the Singapore government is so interested in how Norrbotten and Västerbotten have built the game industry, is a proof of that Arctic Game Lab is someone to count on. At the same time, we are in a tough competition with other countries when it comes to national support and grants that the game industry can use. It is exciting to see how we in northern Sweden could work to really compete with the rest of the world, says Daniel Wilén.
